When should my child
see an orthodontist?

One of the most common questions parents ask — and one with a clear answer. Earlier than most people think.

7
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends age 7. By age 7, your child has enough permanent teeth and jaw development for an orthodontist to spot issues early — while they're still easiest and least costly to correct. Most children evaluated at this age don't need immediate treatment, but the information is invaluable.
Why early matters

Catching problems early
changes everything.

An early evaluation doesn't mean early treatment. It means Dr. Valeri or Dr. O'Connell gets a clear picture of how your child's teeth and jaw are developing — and can act at exactly the right moment.

Guide jaw growth before it's fixed Children's jaws are still growing. Early intervention can guide development in ways that aren't possible once growth is complete.
Prevent more serious problems Issues like crossbites, severe crowding, or jaw discrepancies are far easier — and less expensive — to address when caught at age 7 versus 14.
Shorten future treatment time Early treatment can often reduce the complexity and duration of treatment later. Some children who have phase-one treatment need less time in braces as teens.
Peace of mind for parents Even if no treatment is needed, you'll leave knowing your child's development is on track — or with a clear plan if it isn't.

Warning signs to watch for

Signs your child may need
an evaluation.

You don't need to wait until age 7 if you notice any of these. Schedule an evaluation sooner if your child shows signs like these.
Crowded or overlapping teeth Teeth that don't have enough room to come in properly or are pushing each other out of alignment.
Early or late loss of baby teeth Losing baby teeth much earlier or later than typical can affect how permanent teeth come in.
Difficulty chewing or biting Complaints about pain when eating, or avoiding certain foods due to bite issues.
Mouth breathing Habitual mouth breathing can affect jaw and facial development and may indicate an airway or bite issue.
Thumb sucking past age 5 Prolonged thumb sucking can push teeth forward and affect bite development if it continues after permanent teeth begin erupting.
Overbite, underbite, or crossbite When upper and lower teeth don't meet properly. These bite issues are most effectively corrected while the jaw is still growing.
Shifting jaw or clicking sounds Jaw that shifts to one side or makes clicking sounds when opening and closing can indicate a bite or alignment problem.
Protruding front teeth Front teeth that stick out are more prone to injury and often indicate a bite discrepancy that's best addressed early.

Treatment by age group

Orthodontic care at every stage.

Children · Ages 7–11

Phase One treatment

Early or "Phase One" treatment addresses specific problems before all permanent teeth have erupted — things like severe crossbites, significant crowding, or jaw discrepancies. Not every child needs Phase One, but for those who do it can dramatically simplify later treatment.

Teens · Ages 12–17

Comprehensive treatment

The most common time to start braces or Invisalign. All permanent teeth are in, the jaw is still responsive to treatment, and most teenagers are highly motivated to finish quickly. Metal braces, clear braces, and Invisalign are all great options at this stage.

Adults · Ages 18+

It's never too late

One in four orthodontic patients today is an adult. Braces and Invisalign work at any age — and many adult patients are thrilled by how much their smile affects their confidence. Payment plans make it accessible for every budget.

Common questions

Early orthodontics FAQ

When should my child first see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7. By this age enough permanent teeth have erupted and jaw development is underway to spot potential issues early.

Does my child need braces if they see an orthodontist at age 7?

Not necessarily — and most don't. The goal is early detection, not early treatment. If no issues are found, we simply monitor your child periodically. If something needs attention, we act at exactly the right time.

What does an early evaluation involve?

A simple 30-minute visit where Dr. Valeri or Dr. O'Connell examines your child's teeth, bite, and jaw development, reviews x-rays, and walks you through their findings. Completely free, no pressure.

What are signs my child may need orthodontic treatment?

Crowded or overlapping teeth, early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, thumb sucking past age 5, overbite, underbite, crossbite, or teeth that don't meet properly when the mouth is closed.
